As Christians, we should put others before ourselves. When we get to a door before someone else we should open it for them instead of going through first. If someone is in a hurry or has fewer groceries we should allow them to go before us in the check-out line. If there is only one piece of pizza or cake left and there is someone besides yourself who wants it give it to the other person. Maybe they will follow the same principle and give you half. This is basically treating people the way you would want to be treated or the golden rule. Honor and respect other people and in turn (maybe not right away) you will receive the same.
This portion of scripture also speaks to the idea that we should prefer to be around people who are our brothers and sisters in Christ. Those who are like-minded who we can encourage and honor and who in turn should do the same for us. We should want to hang out with them so we can grow in faith and live a life that is pleasing to God together. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says "Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken." Having Christian friends makes life easier .
Lord help me to give preference to others around me. Treating people with the respect that I would want and preferring to be with people who will honor and glorify you in what they do.
